Getting prepared for your photoshoot

Your Session Guide

Before Your Session

Your family session is about more than taking pictures — it’s about capturing the connection, laughter, and little moments that make your family uniquely yours. My goal is to create a relaxed, enjoyable experience where you can simply be yourselves.

A little preparation can help your session run smoothly and allow us to focus on what matters most: creating beautiful memories for you to treasure for years to come.

What to Know Before Your Shoot:

1. Relax and enjoy the moment.

You don't need to know how to pose or worry about getting every smile just right. I'll guide you throughout the session with natural poses, gentle prompts, and opportunities for candid moments. The best images often happen when you’re simply interacting with the people you love.

2. Let the kids be kids.

Children don't always follow a plan, and that's perfectly okay! Some of the sweetest photographs come from their natural personalities, silly moments, and unexpected expressions. Bring a little patience, a playful attitude, and let them be themselves.

3. Arrive a little early.

Plan to arrive about 5–10 minutes before your scheduled session so everyone has time to settle in, make any last-minute adjustments, and start feeling comfortable.

4. Come prepared.

Make sure everyone has eaten beforehand, especially little ones. Bring water, small snacks for children if needed, and any essentials that will help keep everyone comfortable. Try to avoid snacks or drinks that could stain clothing right before the session.

5. Trust the process.

You don't need to create perfect moments — you just need to be present. I'll take care of the photography while you focus on enjoying your family. Even if things feel a little chaotic, those moments can make the most meaningful memories.

What to Wear for Your Family Photos

Choosing outfits doesn't have to be complicated!

The goal is to coordinate your family's clothing so your images feel timeless, cohesive, and natural without everyone looking exactly alike.

Choose a Color Palette

Start with two to four complementary colors and build everyone's outfits around that palette.

Soft neutrals and earthy tones photograph beautifully, especially in outdoor settings.

What to Wear

- Coordinate, don't match. Choose colors that complement one another rather than dressing everyone in identical outfits.

- Keep it comfortable. Clothes that fit well and allow movement help everyone feel relaxed and look natural.

- Choose simple patterns. Subtle florals, delicate textures, and understated patterns can add interest. Avoid large logos, distracting graphics, and very busy prints.

- Add texture and layers. Knits, linen, denim, flowing dresses, cardigans, and lightweight jackets can create beautiful visual variety.

- Think about your location. Soft, earthy colors work beautifully in parks and wooded settings, while lighter neutrals can complement beach, garden, or historic locations.

- Pay attention to footwear. Shoes should complement your outfits and suit the location. Clean, neutral shoes are often a great choice for portraits.

What to Avoid

- Everyone wearing the exact same color and outfit style

- Neon or overly bright colors that dominate the image

- Large logos, lettering, and distracting graphics

- Extremely busy patterns or too many competing colors

- Clothing that wrinkles easily or needs constant adjusting

- Uncomfortable shoes, especially for outdoor sessions

My favorite tip: Choose Mom's or one family member's outfit first, then coordinate everyone else around it. It's often much easier than trying to plan every outfit at once!.

A Few Extra Tips for Beautiful Photos

Children's portrait

Focus on connection, not perfection.

Hold hands, cuddle your little ones, tell a silly joke, or walk together. You don't need to look at the camera in every photograph. The genuine interactions are often the ones you'll love most.

Bring a few essentials.

A brush, hair ties, tissues, water, and a small touch-up kit can be helpful. For younger children, a favorite comfort item can also make the experience easier.

Embrace the imperfect moments.

Windblown hair, spontaneous laughter, and little arms wrapped around your neck are all part of your family's story. Not every moment has to be perfectly posed to be beautiful.
